Today we celebrate a tireless fighter for justice and the fair and right treatment of all human beings: Pete Seeger turns 90!!

The son of musical parents (dad a composer and ethnomusicologist, mom a classical violinist), Pete quickly picked up first the ukulele but soon thereafter the five-string banjo which remains his trade-mark instrument. At boarding school Seeger soon learned the power and pleasure of sing-alongs and jam sessions, and ever since he has attempted to involve everyone, including his remote TV-audiences in participation in the musical experience.

Seeger’s early career involved learning from master singer-songwriters such as Woody Guthrie, with whom he is seen performing above c. 1940 (image was likely taken in Oklahoma City during a trip Pete and Woody made from Washington, D.C., to Pampa, Okla. Courtesy of Guy Logsdon), and Seeger gained experience performing with the radical group The Almanac Singers. Then came the popular hits phase with The Weavers (Leadbelly’s Goodnight Irene, South African song Wimoweh, etc.) As a song writer, he is best known as the author or co-author of Where Have All the Flowers Gone?, If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song) (composed with Lee Hays of The Weavers), and Turn, Turn, Turn!, which have been recorded by many artists both in and outside the folk revival movement and are still sung throughout the world…
